Haunted Holidays Returns to Brazos Bookstore!

My absolute favorite night of the year has come and gone once again. Haunted Holidays took place on November 9th at the Brazos Bookstore. Literary artists gather together on this night to share their own scary spooky stories about any of the fall and winter holidays. To me the scary season begins with Halloween and doesn’t end until New Years. This year there were several poems and essays about the election. Yep, many consider that to be one of the scariest nights of the year! I had the honor to host the event and dressed up in my scariest finest formal clothing for the evening.

Of course, my skeleton friends were in attendance. They always enjoy a good scary story. There were nine of them who sat amongst the audience and visited with the other attendees.

The following people participated in this event: Jere Pfister, Denise Bossarte, Katherine McDaniel, Jean King, Margo Toombs (who also read a selection by Rebecca Chirak), Dedra Murchison, Laura Pena, Sandi Stromberg and yours truly. One of the scariest stories was written by Katherine McDaniel. She told us a tale of living in a haunted house and everything was based on actual events! EEK! Of course I would be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to thank Melody Locke who served as our cinematographer. She has posted a video of all of the writers and poets on YouTube. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/@wivlahouston5821.

And as always, many many thanks to the Brazos Bookstore and the Houston Writers Guild.

Here is a picture of all of the people who read their literary creations at the Haunted Holidays event:

Please try to remember to join us next year for Haunted Holidays 2025!

Until next time.….

Year 7 Coming Up — What can we do to top the last 6 years?

Wow! How time flies. RoadBroads.com is beginning its seventh year telling the exciting and breath-taking journey of women writers. When it all began, I was heading off to Boulder, Colorado to take part in one of Max Regan’s June Summer Intensives. As you can see, I even bought a new suitcase for the occasion. Of course Hannah the cat assumed she was going to travel with me, but unfortunately she stayed at home. Hannah is now 19 years old and still with me. Neither one of us are as spry as we were 6 years ago, but I’m still writing, and Hannah continues to be Queen of the Universe from her home base here in Houston.

When I arrived in Boulder back in 2018, I remember feeling like one of the  “cool kids”. Most of the classes took place in the Boulder Book Store which means I returned home with more books than I started out with. And since this was before the pandemic, I could run around the bookstore with wild abandon looking at as many examples of the printed word as possible. It was a great trip. Since that summer, I have continued to attend Max Regan’s Exciting Summer Writing Intensives. Zoom is not as exciting as streaking around a bookstore in person, but it works. This summer I will be joining again via computer technology. The good part is that there are other writers here in the Houston area and we plan on meeting together for zoom classes and writing sessions. Don’t worry, if we need a bookstore fix, there is always Brazos Bookstore just a mile or two down the road.

What am I working on for a writing project this summer? Well, yes, I am still crafting the great American novel, but I’m trying something new this year. During the first of the two dynamic intensives, I am going to review all of my short stories. I have written a lot about ghosts, grim reapers, and other creatures that go ‘bump’ in the night. I have published in the anthologies that are created every year by the Houston Writers Guild and Women in the Visual and Literary Arts. I have taken part in various writing projects with WiVLA including several collaborations where Visual and Literary artists join together to tell/show a story. Maybe I will pull all of this together in one collective? Or maybe I will realize how spooky I really am? The possibilities are scary and endless. I don’t think I am as haunting as Stephen King, Neil Gaiman or Alice Hoffman, but that gives me a goal to aim towards.

The best fun of the past six years has been meeting, reading and getting to know some of the finest writers and artists in Houston. When I am around so many creative women, I can’t help but stay inspired. Also, many thanks to Max Regan for the many, many hours he has spent reading, critiquing, and talking to me about my writing craft.

Until next time.……

After Halloween — The Hauntings Continue

I’m relaxing this week and for good reason. Another successful presentation of Haunted Holidays Readings at Brazos Bookstore has come and gone. If you missed it you have two options. You can go to https://youtu.be/A83grQr9bis?si=ZETZ-A-2F9k8nxSi

and watch the enjoyable event on WiVLA’s YouTube channel. Also, you can start writing more spooky stories in preparation for next year.

I must take this opportunity to thank Brazos Bookstore and especially, Amy, who helped to coordinate this evening. Also, when you watch the presentation on YouTube, please know that Melody Locke is our wonderful and official film crew.

As you can see the skeletons who participated this year are quite tired and taking a bit of a rest. You might notice that this year Barbie was able to join in the fun. This was in addition to all of the other spooky guests. Once again this year, my good friend, Jim, served as the Chief roadie and skeleton wrangler. He made sure all skeletons made it to the event on time and then landed back home safely. I think we only lost one sock in the process. Also, Sabina Gartler (Sister WiVLA Member) helped with additional decorations. Finally, thanks to all of the wonderful members of WiVLA and the Houston Writers Guild for joining in with their creative talents. It takes a village to pull off a well organized Haunting. Much gratitude to everyone.

Of course, there will not be a lot of time for rest. There are other holidays to consider, but for me and my skeletons, the stress level goes way down. This fine fellow volunteered to be our official Turkey Day mascot. My official Thanksgiving plans include going to Govinda’s for a vegetarian Holiday dinner with all the trimmings. Yes, I actually like Tofu Turkey!!! I will bring enough home to share with my skeleton crew. It’s the least I can do.

So as of now, I have completed all of my public readings for the year. I will keep you up to date with all of the antics me, my crew and my friends get into over the rest of the holidays.

And of course, I have plenty of time to write. I have both short stories and the Great American Novel that I continue to work on. A writer’s work is never done and skeletons can try to scare you all year round! BOO!!!

Until next time.….…..

Haunted Holidays: The Haunting Continues

Just when you thought Halloween was over and it was safe to go back out after dark.….…It’s time for Haunted Holidays! Yes it is definitely time to call the neighbors and wake the kids! As you can see from the banner above this exciting event is scheduled for this Saturday. Yep, this Saturday, November 5th. It will take place at the wonderful Brazos Bookstore located at 2421 Bissonnet Street, in Houston, Texas!

This event consists of several local writers reading their best work about how haunting holidays can be. Any holiday. Ghosts and goblins don’t just go away and hide once Halloween is over. Sometimes it’s just hard to see them behind all of the bright shiny holiday lights.

Both the Houston Writers Guild and the Women in the Visual and Literary Arts have joined forces with Brazos Bookstore to find the writers who are scheduled to share their work. A great partnership indeed.

Here is a list of writers that will so graciously favor us with their creative brilliance:

  • Gabrielle Langley
  • Sabina Gartler
  • Sandi Stromberg
  • Margo Stutts Toombs
  • Brenda Preuss
  • Penny Koepsel
  • Fernanda Brady
  • and yours truly, Ellen Seaton

Are you as excited as I am? I hope so! Please join us this Saturday, November 5th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Brazos Bookstore for haunting tales and spine-chilling verses.

See you this Saturday!

Preparations for Fall and Halloween

Just because Halloween isn’t here yet, that doesn’t mean we aren’t getting ready. And by that I mean not only humans. I was visited this past week by a group of skeletons fleeing the rising waters in other parts of the country. Also, they wanted a warm, dry spot where they could gather and catch up on their studies. Apparently now there is an invisible sign over my home that reads, “Ellen’s Skeleton Hostel and Tea House”. Of course, that sign may change if other creatures need to find respite to prepare for the upcoming holidays.

I am getting no end of inspiration from them for the haunted reading that I am preparing. On November 5th there will be a Haunted Holidays reading that is being sponsored by the Brazos Bookstore, the Houston Writers Guild and the Women in the Visual and Literary Arts. This year the reading event will take place inside the store. We are making plans for decorations and costumes. Having this event in November covers all holidays from Halloween, El Dia De Los Muertos, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years Eve and everything else in between. Several folks have joked that they wanted to include the election. This should be very interesting. I’ll provide more details as I have them.

Now, back to my skeleton visitors. As you can see they all gathered together for a long study session the other evening. They brushed up on spells, potions, magic brews and sorcery. There is a Book of Fright and a Book of Charms. All in all it’s a lot to cover, but they’ll have it all down by All Hallows Eve. Right now everyone is practicing and studying here in my home. Around the middle of September it will be time for them to move outside and practice their magic skills on the balcony and around the neighborhood.

Sometimes one of the older skeletons will work on a special project and have one of the younger crew assist him. That is what is going on here with the typewriter and extra books that are being closely studied. You may not have realized that in addition to magical skills, there are some skeletons that have impressive intellectual skills. They write the books for other creatures like themselves to learn from. Just like any science, there is always more to know. They have visited several black holes and are very impressed with the amount of knowledge humans are gathering on that topic. The skeletons can’t wait until you learn some more.

Of course after a long day of studying, writing, and practicing, all good skeletons deserve a little time to rest and refresh. Sometimes it’s nice just to sit back and chat with friends. They listen to music, but really don’t have much use for television. In their invisible state they can go to the movies and theater. Just the other day they went to the Symphony and heard their favorite piece, Danse Macabre.

At other times, the older skeletons will “belly up to the bar”, pardon me, I know they don’t actually have any bellies, but you get my drift. They can enjoy a refreshing beverage. How do they do that you might ask? They don’t drink as you and I do, but they love aromas. Chamomile relaxes them and coffee wakes them up. Any kind of alcohol makes them tipsy so they tend to avoid it.

Until next time.……

Pandemic Road: On Planet Earth and Beyond

I don’t know about you, but I have been watching the news lately. There are a couple of stories I am following, but still too much of the serious stuff is not good for my mental health. So, this week I have taken the time to enjoy all of the great pictures that are coming from the Webb Telescope. More and more of them keep getting shared on the internet. I hope you have enjoyed them as well. Folks are having lots of fun with them on Facebook. This is one of my favorites. It really helps me put all of my earthly worries into perspective.

I also like this other picture. I have suggested to Fern Brady that there is a dragon in there. Think about how much fun science fiction writers can have with a dragon that flies around from one universe to another. Maybe this is the reincarnation of Puff the Magic Dragon of the song that was released by Peter, Paul and Mary in 1963. I’ll just bet Puff lives on a planet called Honah Lee. Excuse me if you are not old enough to get the reference. Check out the song on Google or YouTube. I promise you will be enchanted.

So much for my musings. I have finished my June Writing Workshop and am now busy catching up on all things literary. I just wrote a small piece for the virtual anthology that celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Archway Gallery. Additionally, Archway Readings, which have been held on zoom for so long, is finally returning to in-person live readings this month. I can’t wait. I am also working on The WiVLA (Women in the Visual and Literary Arts) Collaboration that will exhibit in December. I have paired up with two different visual artists for two different entries. I will share more about this collaboration when the time draws near.

Last, but not least, Haunted Holidays will happen on November 5th this year. It will be a joint effort between Brazos Bookstore, WiVLA and the Houston Writers Guild. Last year the event was conducted on zoom. We are hoping that we will all meet in-person at the Brazos Bookstore! Again, more details to come as the date draws nearer.

Yikes, I’m busy!

Until next time.….

Pandemic Road: Spooky Christmas!

Well, it’s that time of year. Everyone who began holiday shopping before Halloween, are now out in full force. I am once again reminded, that I am most fortunate to be retired from a typical day job. Traffic jams abound and my car stays parked at home. However, even I, Ms. Scrooge Seaton, have my holiday traditions and they all involve writing and reading scary stories. Would you like to hear some?

Thanks to the Brazos Bookstore for joining up with the Women in the Visual and Literary Arts (WiVLA) and the Houston Writers Guild to present an evening of Spooky Christmas! It will take place on Tuesday, December 7th, beginning at 6:30 p.m. A whole group of writers will be sharing their own works about haunted holidays. You can go to the Brazos Bookstore website for more details or you can register using the following link:

https://brazosbookstore.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcqdumoqT0pHNf98L0ZCpzN_TgTQZ_A2uJj

There is no charge for this event. You simply have to register to get the zoom link.

Yes, I am very excited about this holiday tradition and have been writing and rewriting what I hope will be a fun story to share. My muse has been busy assisting me on this project. You may recognize this particular character. He was also my Halloween muse and will probably continue in this helpful position as New Year’s muse and Spring muse. As I am sure you know, skeletons aren’t just for Halloween anymore. If I’m really nice to my muse, he has promised that I can wear his hat for the Spooky Christmas zoom.

Just in case I don’t get to wear the hat, I did recently get my hair trimmed by my favorite hair dresser, Carol Cooley. Ever since the beginning of the pandemic, she has arranges Porch Cuts, which in this case is actually a garage cut.  Wherever is fine with me. I’m just glad she is able to work out this arrangement with her clients, because she has quite the dedicated following. For anyone who hasn’t seen me since the pandemic changed everyone’s life, I no longer have bangs. And my hair is going “gorgeously grey” as they say. I feel like I am coming more into my own as my hair gets long and grey. I let it blow in the wind and don’t even try to pretend it’s under control. Such freedom and fun. You can decide for yourself if it’s a good look and tell me your opinions after Spooky Christmas. I promise I won’t change a thing, but will enjoy reading your opinions.

I look forward to seeing everyone on December 7th at 6:30 p.m.

Until next time.……

Art and Artists and Artworks, Oh My!

What a wonderful week!

It started off with my Dear Friend (DF) and I going out to the Cullen Performance Hall and listening to Annie Leibovitz talk about her photography while showing many examples of her work on a big screen. She is one of the artists I have made a point of following over the years. As you can see, I did not sit close enough to get a good picture of her while she spoke (yes, that is her down in the lower left corner), but what she had to say was fascinating. She discussed how she became a photographer, the places she has worked, the people she has worked with and those she has photographed. She talked about how the technical aspects of photography and the cameras have evolved since the 1970s. It was all interesting. I got a copy of her latest book, Annie Leibovitz At Work.

In the photo above, she is displaying a self-portrait that she took in 1970 using one of her cameras. I guess today you would call it a “selfie”, but even that she does better than most folks do now with their fancy phones.

Thanks to Houston FotoFest and Brazos Bookstore for arranging this!

Then on Thursday it was another gray day. I guess I could have stayed home and worked on my writing, but what the heck.…I was ready for more ART! So DF and I jumped into his car and drove over to the Menil Collection. It used to be called the Menil Museum when there was just one building. Now there are five buildings and acres of greenspaces.

Unfortunately, they are very strict about not allowing any photographs taken inside any of the galleries. So you will just have to go and see the exhibits yourself. I was able to take pictures in the hallway so you can see some of the suffusion of light and “…natural illumination that varies with the weather, time of day and season”.

There are artworks by Magritte, Ernst, Picasso as well as art from ancient and medieval cultures. Best of all there were TWO, count them, TWO charcoal works by Georgia O’Keefe! Be still my fluttering heart!

The Menil Drawing Institute is a very interesting building. Again there is a focus on natural light and green spaces. The building also includes three courtyards that keep visitors surrounded by Mother Nature. There are benches everywhere for those who want to sit and draw or sit and meditate or sit and visit with friends or just sit.

While I love living in the middle of a large metropolitan city, I really appreciate the green spaces provided by a place like the Menil Collection.

After walking around the Menil Collection for approximately three hours, both DF and I were tired. We decided to rest and recharge by visiting a local restaurant that specializes in crepes.  It is called Sweet Paris and it is located in Highland Village. Since I am still recovering from gastric sleeve surgery, I ordered a bowl of Tomato Basil soup. DF had a Vegan Crepe. As we ate, we reviewed which pictures to include in this blog. All of these pictures were taken with my phone. I’m clearly not as talented as Annie Leibovitz, but I have fun. What a wonderful way to end a day of art and walking.

What a wonderful way to spend a gray day.

Slowly but surely I am even learning more about using a real digital camera for my personal photography. Later this month DF and I will take a photography journey through the Rienzi. Stay tuned!

Until next week.….
